The Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships came to St. Paul this year. Evidently it is the first time this event has ever been hosted in the United States, and it was in our own back yard! We saw some advertising for it on TV, but weren't really sure what it was (the commercials weren't very descriptive), so we decided to check it out last Saturday evening with some of our friends.
The event evidently was a big deal! Over 70,000 people showed up at and around the St. Paul Cathedral to be a part of this event. An ice course had been built for racers to skate on that started next to the steps at the Cathedral and traveled down the hill, up the hill, around the corner, down another hill, until the finish line. Four skaters would race at a time, trying to make it to the finals and be the ultimate skater champion.
These are the friends we went with (I really wish Michael would use a flash sometimes!)
One of the corners that racers had to conquer...also a corner that provided much entertainment through racers crashing
The start of the course...
And a fun night shot of the Cathedral.
It was crazy busy downtown St. Paul, but it was fun to see and be a part of. The bonus of that many people standing around shoulder to shoulder is that we all kept warm on a chilly Minnesota night:)
